Classroom Management
How does the physical arrangement of the classroom impact management? How do you think adapting student assignments (for those with learning disabilities or those who need enrichment) has an impact on classroom management?
I think the physical arrangement of the classroom is huge for classroom management. The students all need to be able to see the front of the classroom, and the teacher should also be able to see all of them. If a student can't see the front of the classroom or the board, they may get distracted and start distracting other students. Also, you have to think about students with disabilities when arranging the classroom. For example, if you have a student that uses a wheelchair, you need to make everything accessible for that student. I am a special education minor, and I have learned that no matter where you teach, you are going to have students from different backgrounds and different experiences in all of your classes. We have to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all of the students in our classroom. If a student is not being challenged enough, they may be off task, as well as if a student thinks something is too hard.
I definitely agree with you Danielle. The physical arrangement of the classroom is a huge part of management. Good thought on the kids being distracted by not being able to see the board. It is going to be challenging for us to differentiate the instruction to meet the needs of all our students knowing the students have different backgrounds and experiences.
There are many ways the physical aspects affects class management. In the classic desk set up rows there are many issues that arise. If friends sit together they will talk, and not much learning will take place. If enemies sit next to each other the tensions arise and not much learning will take place. I like how in PLS, we have U shaped arrangements. This means that no row is in the back so that no student will be in the back-where students can slack off or be forgotten. Another Way to arrange desks is groups. However, another common way to arrange desks is in groups of 4. However, in this case, you have to not only know who is friends with who, you have to know who works well together. As for adapting, they need to be quick, quiet and not embarrassing. We don't want students to be teased during lunch, recess or online.
I agree with making a seating arrangement. It is very difficult to make seating arrangements when students are in elementary school because you do have to be aware of students who are too talkative by each other and students that will have a lot of tension when sitting by one another. I think the U shape is very useful, as well as grouping the desks. I also feel you were exactly right about how to handle making adaptations. I do not think they need to be known by the whole class because that just makes it that much easier for that person to get picked on.
When it comes to the physical arrangement of the classroom I automatically start with the arrangements of the desks for learning. Groups (of 4) can be very effective but even using a U shape, all the kids faces can be seen by the teacher and any misbehavior can be monitored. As far as distractions go, some may get more distracted by background noise they hear outside the classroom or on the other side of the room if a resource teacher comes in to work one on one with a student. Having a divider or special room can help with this arrangement. When we get our own classrooms we will be able to test out arrangements until we get one that works. It also depends on the students each year. It is our job to figure out who works well together, who will get distracted by each other, and who will not learn by each other. So many things go into classroom management and the physical arrangement has a lot to do with it!
I agree that with our own classrooms and with new students each year we will have to adopt the classroom setting for each. Physical arrangement is a very important part of classroom management and it needs to be taken into consideration very seriously to have an effective classroom.
I also think that the arrangement of our rooms is going to differ from year to year. I think when we first start teaching, we can use a lot of the things we are learning now in our level II in our own classrooms, but it is really going to depend on the students and their needs. I like having students in groups or in the u-shape because it would be good to have someone to turn to during partner discussions, but they also have enough space to work independently.
I think seating arrangements and the physical arrangement of the classroom is one of the most important things for classroom management. When you are able to control which students sit by which based on their personalities and learning styles it helps the class go more smoothly and eliminate problems. When you have an arrangement where you can walk by and get to every student, this also helps to eliminate problems and help control the situation. Just the position of you body is a big key in classroom management. I think adapting for those who need help or those with disabilities is also important because you want to make sure that they have a good learning experience as well as the other students. As a teacher you need to eliminate the disability factor by creating a good space for them so they do not worry about their disability and focus on their learning. Seating them in the right spot and with the right students has everything to do with how they will learn and adapt in the classroom.
I agree that the arrangement of the desks in the classroom is very important, especially for a student with a learning disability. For these students, where they are seated in the classroom can either make or break their learning. It's our job as teachers to make sure we can place them where they are most comfortable, but will still succeed. The arrangement for students without a disability is important also, because they may distract other students in the classroom.
The physical arrangement of the classroom impacts management because depending on how the desks are arranged, students may be more likely to socialize during a lesson. This also could be a problem with the teacher being able to move around the room to efficiently get students back on track if they get off task. Students with learning disabilities or those who need enrichment have an impact on classroom management because they may need a little more attention than the average student in the classroom. Hopefully there will be another teacher in the room in order to help out with the lead teacher so all students can be assisted equally.
I definitely agree with the point that you made about that how the desks are arranged has a lot to do with how much the students socialize. It is important to keep who the students most often talk with to help you in the process of choosing a seating arrangement that is effective. I also agree with the fact that you have to keep in mind that the teacher and the other adults in the room have to be able to move around the room effectively too.
I think that the physical arrangement of the classroom is very important to the learning environment. I like how at Price Lab School, the rooms are set up in a u-shape. I think that this is an effective setup because all of the students can see the teacher and the teacher can see all of the students. In the u-shape seating arrangement they aren't grouped into groups, but they still have classmates by them for partner work and to ask a question. I feel like this formation would not be as distracting for students because they aren't directly in a group. When figuring out a seating chart, you have to keep in mind who can sit by who, and who can't sit by who. If you have a student with special needs, you have to keep in mind where the best place in your classroom would be. You have to make sure the student is accessible to everything that the rest of the class is. You have to make sure each child is going to get the most out of learning as possible.
I agree with price lab's desk arrangement. The U shape is very effective, because it does allow the teacher to see the students, students to see the teacher, and they can still be in partners. Also keeping in mind who you each student by is a major factor in classroom management.
I like the "U" shape arrangement also because if teachers are aware of students who are struggling, they can easily place students in a way that they can help each other. Peer tutoring is very effective because it benefits both students because the struggling student receives individual help and the assisting student gets the chance to go over the material again.
I think the physical environment of the classroom impacts management a great amount. Big things to consider when arranging your room are placement of windows, placement of doors, and where the projector screen is. Desks should not be placed where the sun could potentially get in the eyes of a students, also it should be avoided to place desks where students will be distracted by what is going on in the hall. When arranging the desks, the teacher needs to make sure that all the students can see the front of the room and that the teachers will be able to see all the students from the front of the room. Teachers also need to make sure the desks are in a way where it is possible for the teacher to navigate around them easily. It can be effective to have desks in groups or in the “U-shape” because both of these arrangements are perfect for partner/ small group discussion, but it is also easy to monitor the students and be sure to correct behavior issues. Adapting student assignments impacts the rest of the class because you, as the teacher may have to spend more time with one student. Also, I don’t think the adaptation needs to be known by the whole class if it is not obvious because students who need the adaptation might feel self-conscious and/or uncomfortable. Students will disabilities should be placed somewhere in the class that is most beneficial to them. Teachers need to make sure to make adaptions to instruction and assignments to keep everyone on task and able to follow along.
The arrangement of the room has a major impact on classroom management. Desks should always be placed in a way that allows teacher to view all students and students to view the teacher. It should also be set up in a way that allows classroom discussions. The room should be arranged so that students can access the door, wastebaskets, pencil sharpeners, etc, in a quiet way without disturbing the other student's learning. Assignments should be designed for the needs of every learner. They will not be successful in teaching a student if the assignment is too easy, hard, or not understandable to that individual student.
The arrangement of the classroom definitely impacts management and learning. I personally favor desk arrangements that promote conversation or group activities, but that can make maintaining classroom management difficult. However, I think that if clear instructions are given, and students are held responsible for misbehavior, then the classroom atmosphere definitely benefits from a "U" shaped arrangement or something similar. I think that it is very important to be aware of the different ability levels of the students within the classroom because when students are at different levels and all given the same homework, it can disrupt classroom management. For instance, if there are students who are at a higher achieving level of a certain content area, they will most likely finish before most other students and easily become bored. On the flip side, if students are struggling to understand a concept or complete a task, they may fall behind. If they are anxious because they are not at the same level as the other students or trying to rush through their work, they might not hear any new instructions and as a result, become farther behind. That is why it can be very useful to provide students who are at different levels of development within a content area with tasks that accommodate their development, where ever it might be.
