Classroom Management
It has been said that classroom management can be the key to a successful classroom. Why do you think that could be true? In what ways do classroom management techniques impact student learning?
Classroom mangagement is a very important component to a successful classroom. A large part to being able to teach a successful lesson is to have control over the classroom. This does not mean that you are acting as a drill sargeant to your students but as a leader who will keep everyone focused on the topic at hand. Classroom management involves making sure that each student is on task, if any student gets off task it is almost impossible for more students to not get off task also. I think it is true that classroom mangagement plays a huge role in the success of a classroom. Classroom management techniques impact students because they must feel comfortable and confident in their classroom in order to be able to learn. If the students are not held to high expectations that comes with classroom management techniques they will not try as hard to concentrate and learn.
Classroom management is an important aspect of learning because it sets up a positive learning environment. The teacher needs to let the students know what is expected of them within their classroom. These guidelines should create a healthy, respectful learning environment for all students. A classroom without adequate classroom management may have students getting up out of their seats frequently, students talking out of turn, students talking above the teacher in a classroom, possibly even students throwing things in the classroom. All of these activities would make it hard for students to pay attention, listen, and concentrate on school tasks. The teacher however, can very easily set up a healthy learning environment through her classroom management.
I believe classroom management is essential to learning because it creates the environment in which the students are developing multiple aspects of their growth. Effective instruction is vital as well but if you do not have a positive, safe, controlled, and healthy learning environment the students are not going to master the content to the level they need to. Also, classroom management aids in the kind of relationships the students have with each other and the teacher. If the teacher does not have classroom management skills, she may spend an ample amount of time disciplining (possibly ineffective disciplining) and portray herself as an authoritarian as opposed to an authoritative, caring teacher. The management of the classroom may affect the student’s relationships with each other because they may act out towards each other because of the chaotic environment causing negative relationships. Additionally, their negative behavior may be overlooked or ignored due to lack of management and not corrected. Without effective classroom management, the overall climate of the classroom will be less than quality and effect the learning and development of students, which is the sole purpose of the classroom.
I agree with Samantha mentioning a teacher doesn't need to be a "drill sergeant" to obtain classroom management. I have been in classrooms that have made me fear I will somehow turn into the teacher that nags and yells but through instruction on classroom management, I no longer have that fear. There are numerous approaches such as routine and clear expectations that guide a teacher to establish classroom management. Although I know it is harder than it sounds, I don't think any teacher needs to resort to that kind of "management."
I agree that classroom management is the key to having a successful classroom. It is important that a teacher provides an environment that her students can learn in. It needs to be comfortable and open to questions and a place where students feel they can make mistakes. Also, this provides an opportunity for a teacher and student to build their relationship. If the student feels comfortable in their classroom it also means they feel comfortable with their teacher. Even though you want your students to be a comfortable environment to learn, it is important that it isn't too comfortable for them. A teacher needs to know the balance of being too strict and too laid back. I believe if the teacher knows this balance they are going to be very successful in reaching out to their students.
I agree with Samantha mentioning a teacher doesn't need to be a "drill sergeant" to obtain classroom management. I have been in classrooms where the teacher makes me even feel uncomfortable as a guest by the way they discipline their students. Just like in life there are different approaches to certain things as a teacher and I think it is very important to find the right one for your students.
I agree with Amy's statement "A teacher needs to know the balance of being too strict and too laid back." I have seen a lot of teachers forget this balance and end up with a very laid back classroom and others that have such a strict classroom it feels stifling. I think that finding this balance takes time and practice. This balance of strict and laid back is what will really allow your classroom to blossom as a great learning community!
I believe that it is true that classroom management can be the key to a successful classroom because in order for the students to learn they have to be able to pay attention. If the classroom is loud and disruptive, then it is difficult for students to learn the material they are being given. Students need to have a positive learning environment in order to be successful in the classroom. If the teacher comes off as not being able to control their classroom, then the students will pick up on that and "test" their teacher to see what they can get away with. Teachers need to be respected by their students and have to "lay down the law" at times.
I agree with Samantha's statement that we can't act like drill sergeants with our students. Students are able to connect more with a teacher who focuses on staying positive while keeping control of the classroom, rather than a teacher that commands them to do something. They need to feel comfortable in their classroom environment and feel like their opinions matters to the teacher and classmates.
I think that good classroom management is a huge key to student success. If the students are wild and crazy because of poor classroom management, then the students won't get what they are supposed to out of the lesson. On the flip side, if the students are too scared to speak up for fear of being yelled at for being wrong then the students aren't going to learn anything either. There has to be a happy medium that the teacher reaches, strict enough that the students know not to push the boundries and loose enough that the students aren't afraid to speak up in class. The teacher isn't there to be a friend or an enemy, but to be a leader.
I agree with what Amy said about making sure that we create an atmosphere where our students are comfortable making mistakes. I think that students need the positive reinforcement that comes with having a classroom where everyone feels comfortable enough to share their answers and opinionsand not feel as if they're being judged.
I agree with Adrianne. Classroom mangagement is a very important part to a successful lesson. If students are getting out of their seats, talking out of turn, or talking above the teacher; it would be impossible to teach a meaningful lesson. The expectations of the classroom should be clearly labeled to let the students know what they need to do as a student in the classroom.
I certainly beleive classroom management is a big part in helping keep the teacher and the students have a successful classroom. I believe if there is structure and organization in a classroom then there will be stucture and organization for the people in it as well. The students need a routine in order to keep stucture and organization. For example, if the students come in every day, turn in their homework, get out thier notebooks and start reading what is ont the overhead, this is what they will become used to and then be able to have a routined structured classroom.
I agree with what amykbraun is saying! I think it is very important to have a comfortable environment but not too comfortable. Some students get quite comfortable and then start to get lazy and dont think they need to do certain things. I also agree that it is important to let them know that there is never a dumb or wrong question to ask. There is always room for growth and when help is needed it is now frowned upon.
I feel that classroom managment is very important to a classroom. I feel that if you can not control the students, they will not be learning what you want or expect. By being able to have students listening to your instruction, you will foster learning. In order to have them listen a teacher must have control of the class. If a teacher does not have control they will lose students along the way. If they are talking or messing around, they are not learning the intended lesson, and can fall behind. When a teacher has good management over a class, they are more actively involved, thus learning more. This is ideal for a classroom.
I agree with what lilprincess is saying. When students are able to 'control' or 'test' their teacher they will! When you allow students to do what they want, they catch on. I work at an afterschool program, where one of the staff has troubles controlling the students. She allows them to do what they want, and when it comes time for her to re-direct the group; they do not comply. A teacher needs to establish their place in the classroom on the first day, in order to have students respect them.
I would agree that classroom management is a crucial aspect of a successful classroom. Being able to manage your class is important because if you do not have control over your students and they are able to do whatever they want, it makes it very difficult for learning to take place. Having control is important because as the teacher and the authority of the classroom, you need to be able to successfully manage you students. If you do not have their respect and do not have the ability to control them and their actions, then they will not take you seriously as their teacher and will not learn from you the way that they should. If they know that they can run all over you and you are unable to do anything, they will take advantage of you every chance they get which will create problems all year long. Classroom management can also be important when it comes to student learning. If the class is out of control, students are not learning to their potential. These management problems will create constant distractions resulting preventing them from learning. Also, the teacher will not be able to teach to his/her potential because these constant distractions will prevent this effective teaching from occurring.
I agree with what katelyn_54_89 said in that the teacher is not a friend and not an enemy, but a leader. The teacher needs to be able to establish a relationship with their students that gains the respect of the students but does not allow the students to become too close to them by gaining personal relationships. It is the job of the teacher to be a leader for their students, and they do this by gaining students' respect so that students listen to and respect the teacher's authority.
Classroom mangagement is a very important component to a successful classroom. A large part to being able to teach a successful lesson is to have control over the classroom.
