Motivation

Some students are naturally motivated, while others are not. What do you believe is the basis for student motivation in the classroom?

  1. I believe that the key to keeping students interested in school work is making the information relevant to them. They have to understand why they need the information and how they can actually use it. I also think it is important to have a realistic goal to work towards. Some positive reinforcements are usually a good idea to help students STAY motivated.

  2. I believe the best way to keeping student motivated and interested in learning is making the information exciting and engaging for them. I think the information being presented should have some connection to the students and their interests and background. Students like to do work that is personable to them and can be easily understood but still be challenging. Another important thing that keeps students motivated is having a good trusting relationship with the teacher. These are some ways to help keep students motivated.

  3. Keeping students motivated is not an easy task. They often come to school with a lot on their minds and throughout the day with the buildup of homework and new concepts, students are likely to lose the motivation they may have had. I think it is important for students to know how they will use the information in the future. If a students is working on something he/she doesn't think will ever be useful in the future, he/she won't focus on that information. If the teacher relates the concept/information to something they will use in the future, students will most likely remain motivated.

  4. I think that the basis of student motivation is interest. To really get a student motivated and wanting to learn more you have to try to find a way to get them interested in a topic. In an elementary school most students don’t really grasp the importance of a good grade so simply getting an A on a project probably will not motivate the students to work their hardest. I do think that some students are motivated by the idea of doing well on something, but for many students that just isn’t enough. In elementary grades it is usually easier to find subjects and projects that the students truly enjoy and have some curiosity in. I think another major motivator for younger students is the chance to show off their work to their family, teachers, and peers. There are many students who finish a project just so they can show others what they have done. I think a key way to keep the students motivated is to give them the opportunity to show off their work and to allow them to take pride in what they have done.

  5. I agree with Amanda. I trusting relationship with a teacher does keep students motivated. If they enjoy a class and their teacher, they are more likely to pay attention to what the teacher has to say. Also they will try to please this teacher and not let them down. I hadn't thought about this before, but that is exactly the case!

  6. Student motivation is very important to develop in students at a young age so they will continue to be motivated throughout their educational career. I think a successful technique to motivate students is to have goals. By having goals students will work hard to achieve that goal and in the meantime be motivated to learn without even knowing it. As a future teacher I believe I will require my students to set a goal for themselves at the beginning of the year and if they achieve that goal by the end of the trimester/semester or before, I will require them to create a new goal for themselves. Creating new goals will improve students study habits, homework completion, attentiveness in class, or whatever their goal may be. Before you know it students will be motivated to challenge themselves and as a result teachers will have a classroom full of knowledgeable students.

  8. Keeping students interested and movivated can be challenging. It is important to have a welcoming and positive classroom atmosphere. This is important so students feel comfortable and can engage in their learning. Also taking an interest in your stundents learning and progress will make students feel like they belong. Keeping the curriculum fresh and exciting is also important. Finally it is important for students to set goals. These goals allow students have something to work for.

  9. I think that science videos the 5th graders are currently making are an awesome motivation tool. They are all putting a lot of time and work into them because they know that the rest of the class will be watching them. Once student was even talking to me about what his mom and dad would think of his video. I have really enjoyed helping with this project because I can see that each student is motivated to do their best and create a good video. I have also noticed a difference between classes and the motivation level. I have noticed that Mrs. Lockhart’s class seems to be more competitive with each other and I think that has really motivated them to get really creative with their scripts. Mr. Nielson’s class seemed to be more concerned with their own projects and not worried about the other groups. I think that is just an example of how the students are motivated differently yet both classes are doing a really great job.

  10. I think one of the main goals in teaching is to make sure your students are motivated in the classroom. I think by doing this you need to make your lessons the most interesting as possible. It is easier for a student to be motivated in there work if they think its fun or interesting! I also think its the responsibility of the teacher to make sure the students know why they are learning this information because they might not be able to see the big picture and understand why they are learning it. I think that all these things are possible as long as the teacher understands his/her particular classroom it will be challenging but it is possible.

  11. I agree with buyckj I think it is important to have a safe and positive class but that won't keep your students motivated throughout the lessons. I think its important part but when you said that as a teacher you must have interest in your students is even more important. To me to have your students motivated you must go through multiple steps and this is a important one because if you do not show interest in your studetns you will not know what they will be interested in and what kind of activities they will like to keep them motivated. Since your class changes every year you will need to make adjustments to your lesson plans to keep them motivated.

  12. Student motivation comes from a couple of things. First it comes from the students attitude towards learning. If the student wants to learn , then it is going to be easier for the teacher to motivate them to pay attention to lessons and get their assignments done. But in order for the student to want to learn, they need to be interested in what they are learning about. Student motivation also comes from students interest in subject content. Being interested in what you're learning about makes learning more fun, and more of an enjoyable, memorable experience. Although not every student's interest can be met in every lesson, the teacher can figure out the broad, general interests of the students and try to incoorporate those into the lesson.

  13. I agree with Jen when she says it is important for students to know why they are learning the information being given to them. I know pointless (or so it seems to me) information never stays with me very long. I remember the information for the test and as soon as the test is done, I forget everything. When I know why I am learning information, it becomes real and something in my head turns the information into something I will remember for a longer period of time.

  14. I believe that the basis for student motivation in the classroom is teaching the student's information in a way that interests them. It is important to make material relevant; to teach students why they would need and want to learn the information. I believe another motivation for students in the classroom is making the material to fit the students levels. If material is too easy students will be uninterested, but if the material is too hard, students will want to give up and will not be motivated to learn.

  15. Kristi mentioned that she believes students are motivated by getting to show off their work. I definitely agree with this! I remember when I was in elementary school, I could never wait to go home and show my parents what I had completed. I believe students are looking for acceptance, and giving them a change to show off their work at home, to teachers, and to peers gives them a feeling of acceptance and accomplishment. In 5th grade science, the students were motivated on working hard on their videos because they knew that they would be seen not only by their teachers, but also their peers.

  16. I believe the key to keeping students motivated in the classroom is to gear lessons and activities towards the interests that students have. If a teacher is giving a lesson about a topic students have no interest in they will have a very hard time being motivated to listen, particiapte in class discussions and compete quality work.

  17. I also agree with Jen who said that to keep students interested in lessons or activities they need to be fun or interesting. To make lessons or activities fun or interesting they should be as hands on and age appropriate as possible

  18. I feel that students are motivated by interests. If a student is more engaged in what they are learning and interested in it I feel that they will be the ones to get more out of it. Students need topics that will keep them engaged and doing different things. I feel like if a teacher falls into a routine of having them read a book then writing about it the students won't want to continue that. Students who know that other people will see their work seem to be motivated to make it look better. I think it is good to make classrooms competitive at times because students who are competitive will be more motivated. I don't think this should be an all the time deal but every once in a while maybe throw in some competition.

  19. I also agree with Jen. I feel that students want to show their work to peers. They like to get feedback from them and often feel like they will give them what they need. They like positive reinforcements. Some students are people pleasers and that is how they please by showing their work.

  20. Motivation can only come from within. Students can be influenced by others, but until they are excited for themselves to learn something new or take a challenge, it will not spring them into action. It is all in the students' upbringing as to how motivated of a person they are. There are outside influences that contribute to a student's motivation such as wanting to do better than someone or wanting to impress your teacher or parents. This would only affect the student if they had an inner motivation to begin with.

  21. I agree with buyckj in that keeping a warm and welcoming environment fosters motivation. When a student is being welcomed into a classroom full of peers who are going to support them, they will be motivated to do well because they are surrounded by other students who positively reinforce each other. This also starts with the tone the teacher sets for the classroom. If the teacher creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere, then the students will be more likely to follow in that direction.
